In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
