The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
