RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
