Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
